In the early 1900s, during one of his frequent visits to the Paris Opera House, journalist and novelist Gaston Leroux began to hear rumours of a ghost that haunted the old building. Several unexplainable deaths had been attributed to this spectre, and backstage gossip only fuelled the story.
Though the novel and associated adaptations are usually thought of as horror stories with a suspense element, The Phantom of the Opera is also a sad love story. Erik, the phantom, is in love with young singer Christine. She, in turn, has some connection and affection for him, although she rejects his love in the end.

Describing his painful childhood, Erik at one point reveals that, prior to meeting Christine, he had never been kissed in all his life.
